Written by Jonathan Hansen
Weddings are of the most important and memorable events in a person's life. As a videographer, it is their responsibility to capture every detail of that special day, from the bride and groom's vows to dancing at the reception. However, there are some important details that many videographers tend to miss during weddings. Here are some of the most important details that you should make sure to inquire about when hiring a wedding videographer.
Getting Ready
One of the most overlooked aspects of wedding videography is getting ready shots. The bride and groom getting ready for their ceremony is absolutely a special moment that helps tell the story of the day. It is a must for the videographer. The photographer never misses these moments and videographer shouldn’t be held to any less of a standard. These moments can include putting on the dress, applying makeup, or the best man fixing the groom’s tie. Make sure to capture the emotions of the bride and groom as they prepare for their special day. It’s attention to the small details at this moment that matter.
2. Ceremony Decorations
The ceremony decorations are often overlooked but can add so much to the final video. Make sure to capture shots of the ceremony location before the guests arrive. This includes the flowers, the altar, and the decorations that have been put up for the ceremony . Any video geek can tell you that “insert” shots are very useful when editing. These shots will help set the mood for the ceremony and give the video a more polished and complete feel.
3. Wedding Party Gifts and Details
The wedding party is an important part of the wedding day and should be captured on video. This includes getting shots of the bridesmaids and groomsmen getting ready, as well as their gifts and any special details, such as boutonnieres or corsages. These shots will help tell the story and show the relationships between the bride and groom and their wedding party. Aside from the couple, in a way, the day belongs to these special people as well. At least the memories do. They are in the wedding party because the bride and groom love them enough to highlight them among the entire crowd. Lets make sure your videographer doesn’t forget to highlight them either.
4. Candid Moments
Candid moments are often some of the most memorable and emotional moments and they should be captured as such. Candid footage takes into consideration that the bride and groom will watch the wedding video later on and perhaps many times later in life. Candid footage allows the couple to feel like a fly on the wall. The actual wedding day is so chaotic for a bride and groom. They never really get a chance to sit back and observe. The dream of a bride and groom is to attend their own wedding as a guest. Video brings that dream to reality. It’s candid moments that give this feeling. These can include shots of the bride and groom laughing with family and friends or capturing the emotions of the couple during the ceremony. It's important to capture these moments as they happen to tell the story and make the video more personal and emotional.
5. Speeches and Toasts(THE AUDIO)
This really isn’t something videographers miss but I’ll use it as an excuse to talk about something that drives me nuts about videographers. AUDIO. Speeches and toasts are a key part of the reception and should be captured on video but if you can’t HEAR what they are saying, why would it even matter? These moments often have a lot of emotion and are the perfect recipe for the viewing experience. We need to hear them. Videographers should have professional audio recording devices that can either be connected directly to the DJ’s mixer or that can be placed near a speaker to record the sound coming out. Your wedding video should play just like a great movie. If the sound is bad, you’re going to leave the theatre, so to speak.
Videographers should pay attention to every detail of the wedding day to capture the essence of the event. From the getting ready moments to the speeches and toasts, every detail matters. It's important to make sure that the video tells a story and captures the emotions of the bride and groom, their families, and friends. By capturing these details, the video will be a lasting memory that the couple can cherish for years to come.
